Lecture (Guest Speaker) Meetings 2018

Jan 5, 2018 -  Bob Victor, author of the Abrams Planetarium  "SKY CALENDAR,"  will be speaking on  "What's Up for 2018?"  This will be held at the Portola Community Center, 45-480 Portola Ave., Palm Desert, 92260.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for refreshments and the talk begins at 7:00 pm.

 

February 2, 2018 - Bruce M Gottlieb, amateur astronomer/photographer, and President of the Astronomical Society of the Desert, will be speaking on the "Total Solar Eclipse of 2017."  Bruce will explain why eclipse happen, and share photos from his trip to Casper, Wyoming, to view the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.  This will be held at the Portola Community Center, 45-480 Portola Ave., Palm Desert, 92260.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for refreshments and the talk begins at 7:00 pm.

 

March 2, 2018  - Dennis Mammana is author of six books on astronomy and the “Stargazer” nationally syndicated newspaper column. He has held planetarium positions at the Smithsonian Institute and San Diego’s Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. He will be speaking on "The Illusion of Now."  The cosmos is a powerful illusion; nothing is as it appears. Tonight you will discover how all that we see in the sky above us appears not as it is "now" but as it was long ago, and how peering farther into space allows us to see back into time.  This event is FREE and open to the public.  This will be held at the Portola Community Center, 45-480 Portola Ave., Palm Desert, 92260.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for refreshments  and the talk begins at 7:00 pm.
