(Lecture) Guest Speaker Meetings 2024

January 26, 2023 - Bob Victor, author of the Abrams Planetarium "Sky Calendar,"  will be speaking on "What's Up for 2024."   This will be held at the Portola Community Center, 45-480 Portola Ave., Palm Desert, 92260.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for refreshments and the talk begins at 7:00 pm.

February 23, 2024 - Dennis Mammana is author of six books on astronomy and the “Stargazer” nationally syndicated newspaper column. He has held planetarium positions at the Smithsonian Institute and San Diego’s Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. The topic of his talk will be "Borrego After Dark:  A Photographic Journey."  For those who love the serene beauty of the desert night sky, the photos you'll see tonight represent the best of the best, compiled over the past few decades of Dennis' nocturnal wanderings.  All evoke a sense of wonder, and all will inspire you to view the desert sky a bit differently than ever before.

This will be held at the Portola Community Center, 45-480 Portola Ave., Palm Desert, 92260.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for refreshments and the talk begins at 7:00 pm.

March 22, 2023 - Dr. Stephenie Slahor is a lawyer, writer, lecturer, and professor.  She will be speaking about our Moon.  Although we call our Moon the humble name of "Moon," many cultures had specific names for the Moon, and our modern almanacs give names to each month's full Moon.  We'll look at the Moon's role in mythology, folklore and festivals, how to garden with the Moon's help, Blue Moons, what happened to the Moon rocks we've collected, what's on the Moon right now, and what our local Cahuilla Native Americans have to say about the Moon.

This will be held at the Portola Community Center, 45-480 Portola Ave., Palm Desert, 92260.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for refreshments and the talk begins at 7:00 pm.
